Recruiting site Glassdoor’s recent report on America’s top-paying companies showed that tech, alongside consulting, is the country’s leading industry for high wages. No fewer than 20 of the 25 biggest payers were tech firms, on a list whose entrants pay employees an average of around $130,000 – around 4.5 times the median US wage of $28,851.
Leading the charge is Juniper Networks, the Sunnyvale-based network giant, whose employees earn a median $157,000. Google, VMWare and Amazon followed closely, while software firm Guidewire rounded out tech’s top five with a median compensation of $150,020.
It’s not all happy in the Valley: Glassdoor also reports on the difficulty of getting a job at top firms, with many tech players tough workspaces to make it into. Once there, however, employees can expect working conditions that are the envy of those in other industries. This year’s Forbes 100 Best Companies To Work For rated Google as number one employer. SAS, Genentech and Ultimate Software also featured in the top 20.
