The Red Herring Top 100 Europe event came to a close last week in Amsterdam, where 100 of the brightest and startups on the continent walked away with an award.
The conference hosted a lively debate on international expansion for European entrepreneurs – should they stay at home or seek better markets elsewhere? Red Herring Chairman and CEO Alex Vieux urged the attending companies to look west, and other speakers talked up the positives of keeping European roots, while expanding their business to Africa, Asia and the Americas.
A number of top investors talked at the conference, giving attendees valuable insight into how to best attract the right type of investment. A major challenge agreed upon by speakers and attendees was a lack of funding in Europe, which made this part of the talk even more crucial for entrepreneurs looking for investment.
When the conference was over the company presentations began, and it was clear from the first pitch that the standard was high. Companies came from all over Europe, and included two African startups and a strong showing from Israel.
The 100 winners stood out from an extremely tough set of competitors, making the achievement even more impressive. They came from a multitude of different sectors, and will all be watched keenly as they make future strides in Europe, or beyond.
