International Data Corporation (IDC) reporting second quarter figures, indicate that Research In Motion have secured over half of the US smartphone market with a market share of 53.6 percent. The number is up sharply over the company's 44.5 percent market share after the first quarter.
According to IDC analysts the results can be attributed to the release of the last years BlackBerry Pearl model, and last month's eagerly anticipated release of the new Curve handset. Both handsets operate on the Verizon and Sprint-Nextel family of networks, the leading CDMA technology service providers in the US.
Apple iPhone numbers dropped drastically from the near 20 percent slice of the market in this years first quarter to 7.4 percent by the end of the second quarter. This substantial drop in market share can be mainly attributed to 'hold-out' customers waiting for the release of the new 3G model which should be reflected in the sales figures for the third quarter.
Palm, once the leader of the pack, saw its market share drop to 10.8 percent from 13.8 percent in the second quarter, this despite the company reducing the introductory price of its Centro handset to $99.
