According to MySpace News, Meraki, a network equipment manufacturer that provides hardware and software for wireless community networks, is offering free WiFi internet to San Franciscan's one neighborhood at a time. Generally, if you were interested in offering WiFi in a certain building, street, or city, you would purchase some Meraki WiFi boxes, plug them into a few broadband connections, and they would configure themselves to wirelessly share the the connection among each other. The company, based in Mountain View, is simply using their own backyard as a technological guinea pig. If you're in one of the neighborhood's that Meraki is already offering free WiFi in, you can just hop onto the network. If you're not, you might be able to get Meraki to bolt an outdoor repeater on to your house (thus also helping expand more!). Could it get any better than that? Happy surfing, Internet lovers!
