According to CNN.com, several attorney generals have stated that Facebook will be adding more than 40 more safeguards to protect their young users. Some of the new safeguards include banning sex offenders from using the site (well, duh, shouldn't this have been done a long time ago? Kudos Facebook, Kudos...), limiting older users' ability to search for users under the age of 18, and building a "task force" to better verify users' ages and identities.
"The agreement marks another watershed step toward social networking safety, protecting kids from online predators and inappropriate content," said Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. "Building a safe and trusted online experience has been part of Facebook from its outset," said Chris Kelly, Facebook's chief privacy officer. "The attorneys general have shown great leadership in helping to address the critical issue of Internet safety, and we commend them for continuing to set high standards for all players in the online arena."
Has it really taken people this long to figure out that these things needed to be done? Honestly, this information sort of repulses me. Things like this should have to be required if users under 18 are going to be permitted to use a social networking site. The internet is becoming a big, mean, scary old place where anyone can get in contact of anyone, so why now? Why have you waited until NOW, after tons of crimes have been committed, to step into action? Well, if it's taken you this long to respond to the things that have happened to kids over the internet, I'm sure it will be a long while until I get my answer... Until then folks, sleep sound knowing your child is becoming safer and safer from online predators by the minute...
