Internet calling company Skype announced Tuesday the appointment of former Motorola executive Scott Durchslag as chief operating officer.

In this newly created position, effective immediately, Mr. Durschlag will be in charge of improving customer experiences, creating new partnerships, and boosting the company’s product marketing.

“I'm convinced the opportunities ahead for Skype are tremendous given how the world is changing,” Mr. Durchslag said in a statement.

The new COO will report to Skype President Josh Silverman, who was appointed to the position in March 2008.

The company, created in 2003, was bought in 2005 by online auction giant eBay for a hefty $2.6 billion, half of which was paid last year.

The Internet calling company, which boasts 309 million registered users, announced that people have talked to one another for more than 100 billion minutes using free Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls since its 2003 launch.

The company is hoping to further increase its customer base by developing and improving its video calls and attract small businesses seeking to cut costs by using its videoconferencing services.

Skype posted first-quarter total revenue of $126 million, an increase of 61 percent over the prior year, but revenue per customer showed no increase, at about $10 a year.
