DEAL OF THE DAY: X:DRIVE, $45M
Ever run out of closet space, but weren't willing to sell those "skinny" clothes that someday will fit you? Well, you have something in common with companies that startup X:drive is trying to woo. X:drive is a Web-based storage service for enterprises that have outgrown their C: drives. Since its initial launch in the consumer market last year, it's drawn 2.5 million customers and enjoyed four rounds of private equity funding.
X:drive had been focused solely on the consumer market, but after analyzing the content its customers were storing, X:drive realized that there was a big market for corporate storage. Fifty-five percent of its customers use the site to store business-related items. With the new focus on enterprise, X:drive attracted funding from Storage Networks and Veritas Software.
Though X:drive's pulling in $1 million per month from its consumer business, CEO Bret O'Brien expects enterprise storage to quickly become the largest part of the company's revenues. Three Fortune 500 firms are testing the service; each will bring X:drive 30,000 to 40,000 users. A third-quarter IPO is likely, Mr. O'Brien says. X:drive better do it quick: IBM just made a $400 million push into the network storage market.
