Sony Tests Digital Distribution on Patapon 2

Sony is venturing further into digital distribution.

Sony of America announced that the upcoming PSP title Patapon 2 will be sold as a digital product. Consumers can either buy it online or buy the download code at retailers.

Patapon 2, the sequel to hit rhythm strategy game Patapon, has already been released on UMD, Sony’s proprietary disc for playing games and movies on the PSP, in Japan, and Europe.

Sony is calling this a one-time “test case” for digital release. Perhaps the company is afraid of ruffling too many retail feathers.

While digital distribution is a common occurrence on PCs, consoles have remained mostly fixated in retail. Each console sports its own digital storefront to purchase downloadable titles, but they rarely sell bigger games that can be found on retail shelves as well, unlike the Steam platform on PCs.

By forgoing a physical product, Sony avoids used game sales and trade-ins–an issue that has long irked developers and publishers.

Patapon 2 will be released in North America on May 5.
