Google Loses Android Tech Chief to Startup

Google’s star talent has been poached again.

Coupons.com on Tuesday said former lead Android engineer Steve Horowitz has been attracted away from Google to the startup. Android is Google’s Linux-based open-source mobile operating system, which runs the G1 phone.

“Our business is experiencing unprecedented growth, and as we extend our digital promotions platform to in-store, in-appliance and mobile phones, this is the ideal time for Steve to bring his deep experience to our team,” Coupons.com founder and CEO Steven Boal said in a statement.

Mountain View, California-based Coupons.com said Mr. Horowitz will serve as chief technology officer and head the company’s worldwide engineering, technology, and product management.

The company claims that its online coupons business is soaring as the economy crashes and belt-strapped consumers look for ways to save money. In 2008, people printed out more than $300 million in coupons from the site, an increase of 140 percent from a year earlier. Coupons.com forecasts it will issue $1 billion in coupons for 2009.

Coupons.com, started in 1998, won Red Herring’s North America 100 award in 2008.
