Sharepoint Assassin Snags $7 Million

Central Desktop on Wednesday scored $7 million in funding from OpenView Venture Partners for its web-based wiki software.

The Pasadena, California, startup wants to be the centralized place for people to gather for business meetings, plan work, and communicate.

"We think there is a chance to grab a sizable chunk of the market," Central Desktop CEO Isaac Garcia said.

Central Desktop connects people to shared calendars, documents, spreadsheets, email alerts, instant messaging, and web-conference meetings, among other features.

Founded in May 2005, Central Desktop pulls in about $2.5 million in sales a year from its roughly 2,000 subscriber base of customers. The company expects to do sales exceeding $100 million years within roughly five years.

Larger rivals include Microsoft's Sharepoint and Google's Apps.

Under the deal, Central Desktop added OpenView Venture Partners managing partner Scott Maxwell and partner Mark Berry to its board of directors.

"My view is that anybody who is using an email program is getting inundated with email and is using it for collaboration purposes and it's getting to be a real pain point–lets' use a different vehicle to collaborate," Mr Maxwell said.
