iPhone Apps: Geeks Gone Wild

Apple’s iPhone software development kit release has been met by a crush of geeks.

The Cupertino, California, computer maker said on Wednesday that more than 100,000 developers have downloaded the software development kit since its March 6. launch.

"Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days," said Philip Schiller, senior vice president at Apple.

On the same day Apple launched the development kit, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers announced it was putting up $100 million to seed development of applications for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The Mac maker also previewed its new App Store that will allow developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to the iPhone and iPod touch. Prices for applications will be set by developers. Apple will get a 30 percent cut in the sales of apps.

Apple is attracting a wide range of developers from games publisher Electronic Arts to business software maker Intuit.
