Pizza, Pitching Frenzy for Startups

More than 150 Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, investors, and industry observers gathered at DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary in Palo Alto, California, on Tuesday night for the latest NewTech Meetup Group, a forum for networking and pitching ideas. In a long meeting room flanked by a half dozen pizza boxes and bowls filled with iced soda cans, Brian Solis and Keith Vu of public relations and marketing firm FutureWorks presided over a two-hour affair featuring presentations from four different Bay Area startups.

Vyew

The web-based collaboration and conference technology developed by Vyew hopes to lure those dissatisfied with client software and firewall issues that can plague meetings conducted through WebEx, NetMeeting, or GoToMeeting. Another advantage of Vyew, says CTO Christopher Peri, is the ability to have meetings quickly. Participants only need a web browser that supports Flash. Vyew allows participants in meetings to upload files, share them, and modify them on the fly. It also includes screen capture tools, built-in chat, and third-party VoIP support. Currently on version 2, Vyew offers both free (ad-supported) and paid (ad-free) versions. If able to raise an additional $2 million to $4 million, Mr. Peri said his company can finish version 3 of its product and start spending money on marketing. According to Vyew Senior Software Architect Tim Hon, the company is already serving some 10,000 registered users. Each day sees some 700 meetings joined and 3,000 hits on the company's web site. Version 1 of the service launched in December. Here’s hoping WebEx isn’t already toiling away on their own web-based service.
