100 Million DSes Sold

Nintendo is raking in the money, announcing yesterday that it has crossed yet another milestone: the 100 million mark for its DS handheld.

Yep, the DS, which has only been out since 2004, has already sold 100 million units worldwide. Of course, this includes both the original DS and the sleeker DS Lite, the latter of which probably accounted for most of the sales.

While the DS has yet to toppled the record set by the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, with 119 million units sold worldwide, the rate at which the DS is selling suggests that it’ll surpass those sales soon enough.

Of course, if you believe the Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP handhelds should be included in total Game Boy sales, they would tack on over 80 million more units to the total.

Meanwhile, Nintendo’s competition, Sony’s PSP, has sold 50 million so far – an impressive number considering that Sony’s a new contender in the handheld market, but still only half of Nintendo’s numbers.

And Nintendo still has plans to widen the gap. The recent release of the DSi in Japan, and the upcoming release in North America and Europe, should add a sizeable chunk to that 100 million, especially since the DSi is the best-selling system in Japan, despite there already being at least one DS in every household.

Oh, Nintendo, you won’t stop until every single person has a DS, will you?
